We honor Earth month with our exhibit “A Natural Progression.”

Each piece in the exhibit represents a story that the respective artist seeks to share. Rich with variety, contrasts, color and mediums, the exhibit progresses through fundamental aspects of the beauty found in our Earth.

Arkansas native Betsy Brackin’s acrylic paintings tell the story of the Delta farmland.  While this graduate from Memphis College of Art has traveled the world, her greatest inspiration remains Eastern Arkansas where her family has called home since the early 1900s.

In contrast, Bryan Blankenship conveys stories of the urban landscape through his 3-D mixed-media sculptures.  Abandoned roadways, dilapidated buildings, and objects that seem to be of no use for one reason or another fuel his goal to reflect the natural process of weathering and the effect that time has on the landscape.  While originally from Missouri, Bryan finds his years in Memphis to be the most informative to his work.

Flora of sea and land continue the viewers’ journey.  Gallery owner and mezzo fresco artist, Tom Clifton, provides a look into the Caribbean Sea with his works inspired by his time in St. John, US Virgin Islands.  Local artist Jen Winfrey adds a burst of color and whimsy with her artistically crafted ceramic flowers.  Jen’s flowers will last long past spring.

Reflecting ways to renew nature’s progression are Memphis artists Donna Blackard and Tim Andrews (also a MCA graduate) with their sculptures from objects others have discarded.  Reclaiming these materials and using as the inspiration for artwork, Donna and Tim also have collaborated to provide the exhibit with four joint works in addition to their solo pieces.  These collaboration pieces team Tim’s signature “Bird Shack” designs and functionality with the mysteries told through Donna’s assemblages.
