Bonnie Shopper – enamel (glass on copper)

The art of enameling found Bonnie more than 50 years ago when she was working as a Recreational Therapist in New York’s Memorial Hospital for Cancer.  Born, raised and educated in New York City, she had never entertained thoughts of being an artist until she was asked to “teach” enameling to patients.  Intrigued by the process and results, she further refined her talent at Brooklyn Museum Art School.  But 20 years ago, she felt her art had started to own her and she turned off her kiln.  Fortunately for those who love brilliant, strong colors that glisten like jewels, her son got her to fire up that kiln after her self-imposed hiatus.

She achieves the gem-like brilliance with great depth to her artwork by fusing copper metal with transparent colors of glass in powdered form.  She also incorporates oxidation into her design to further define the form and add intensity.  While enameling is an ancient art dating back to the 6th Century BC, Bonnie provides both functional and decorative work for today’s art enthusiast.  She currently resides in St. Louis.
